Sardinia Is the Mediterranean Escape Everyone Is Looking For, and Nammos Is One of the Reasons Why
An American travel and fitness journalist, author, former pro-athlete and…
There are certain places you visit because everyone else is going. And then there are places you visit and wonder why everyone else isn’t already there.
For me, Sardinia is the latter.
I love the South of France. I understand the allure of Saint-Tropez. I’ve experienced the energy of Ibiza. But after spending time along Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda, I found myself thinking something I wasn’t necessarily expecting: I might like Sardinia better.
Maybe it is because luxury here feels quieter.
There is no constant need to be seen. You don’t feel as though you are competing with thousands of other travelers for the same beach chair, dinner reservation or perfectly positioned sunset table. The yachts are still there. The designer boutiques are there. The champagne is definitely there. But Sardinia somehow manages to deliver all of it without losing the very thing that made you travel to an island in the first place: escape.
And then there is the water. I have traveled to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and Sardinia’s water genuinely stopped me in my tracks. Shades of turquoise, emerald and almost impossible blues surround stretches of white sand and sculpted granite. It is the kind of water you normally assume has been edited when you see it on Instagram. Then you arrive and realize the photos weren’t exaggerating.
Costa Smeralda alone is home to 22 beaches within the territory managed by the local consortium, with the region celebrated for its white sand and crystalline water.

The Luxury of Not Trying Too Hard
What surprised me most about Sardinia was how naturally luxury fits into the landscape. In Saint-Tropez, summer can sometimes feel like a production. Ibiza has its own unmistakable energy, built around movement, music and nightlife. Sardinia operates at a different frequency.
It is glamorous without constantly announcing that it is glamorous. You can spend the morning swimming, have a long lunch overlooking the Mediterranean, wander through Porto Cervo for a little shopping, disappear back to the beach and somehow end up drinking champagne as the sun goes down.
That is my kind of itinerary.
Porto Cervo gives you the fashion fix without requiring a trip back to Milan or Paris. Its Piazzetta, promenade and winding streets are lined with international luxury houses and seasonal boutiques, while the nearby Waterfront Costa Smeralda combines fashion, art, design, entertainment and waterfront life.
But even surrounded by beautiful stores, yachts and restaurants, Sardinia never felt overwhelmingly touristy to me. And that matters. Travel has changed. Sometimes the greatest luxury isn’t getting into the most impossible reservation. It is having enough space and time to actually enjoy where you are.
Then I Arrived at Nammos
If there is one place that captures this version of Sardinia particularly well, it is Nammos Baja Sardinia at Phi Beach.
Nammos already comes with a certain reputation. The name evokes long lunches, beautiful people, champagne, music and Mediterranean summers. But placing that energy against the natural landscape of Sardinia changes the experience.
Nammos Baja Sardinia sits at Phi Beach along the Costa Smeralda, surrounded by crystalline water and Sardinia’s sculpted granite coastline. The restaurant combines Mediterranean cooking with international influences, with seafood and premium ingredients taking center stage. The setting immediately makes you want to stay longer than you planned. Come for lunch and suddenly lunch becomes an afternoon. That is exactly how dining by the Mediterranean should feel.

Let’s Talk About the Food
Of course, a beautiful view can get me through the door once. The food determines whether I want to come back. At Nammos, I would come back.We started with bread, which sounds simple until you remember that some of life’s best meals begin with good bread, olive oil, conversation and absolutely nowhere else you need to be.
Then came the octopus. Tender, flavorful and unmistakably Mediterranean, it was the kind of dish that reminded me why seafood tastes different when you’re eating it this close to the source.
But the pastas were the dishes I kept thinking about afterward. The lobster pasta was indulgent without becoming too heavy. Fresh seafood, pasta and the Mediterranean Sea in front of you is a combination that doesn’t require much explanation. You simply order it.
Then there was the truffle pasta. Rich. Fragrant. Decadent. It is the kind of pasta that forces the table to go quiet for a moment because everyone is too busy taking another bite. That balance runs throughout the Nammos experience. The restaurant’s culinary philosophy centers on fresh seafood and Mediterranean flavors while incorporating international influences. Nothing about the meal felt rushed, and that’s another thing Sardinia seems to understand exceptionally well.
Sometimes luxury is simply being allowed to linger.

Lunch Should Become Sunset, and Dinner Should Become a Party
One of the best things about Nammos Baja Sardinia is that the restaurant isn’t isolated from the rest of the Phi Beach experience. You can make a day of it. And you should.
Phi Beach sits just a few kilometers from Porto Cervo and moves almost seamlessly from daytime beach escape to sunset destination and, eventually, nightlife. During the day, Nammos guests can pair lunch with a beach experience complete with sunbeds, towels and umbrellas. As afternoon begins turning into evening, the rocks and water take on the warmth of golden hour.
This is when Sardinia really starts showing off. Music gets a little louder. Drinks appear. Everyone seems to collectively understand there is absolutely no reason to leave yet. And why would you?
You have the Mediterranean in front of you, dinner nearby and one of those sunsets that makes everyone at the table reach for their phones at exactly the same time. But once dinner begins, Nammos shifts again.
Somewhere between the pasta, champagne and another round of drinks, dinner starts turning into a party. The live music begins. People start singing. Napkins are suddenly in the air, twirling above tables as the entire restaurant seems to join the celebration.
I looked around and saw people visiting from all over the world doing exactly what we were doing: eating, drinking, singing, dancing and having a genuinely good time.
For a moment, there are no separate tables. It feels like one big Mediterranean dinner party. That is part of the magic of Nammos. You can arrive expecting a beautiful meal by the sea and find yourself in the middle of a celebration you didn’t necessarily know was coming.
And the best part?
The party doesn’t end there.
When dinner winds down, you can practically stumble over to Phi Beach and keep the night going.
Phi Beach takes the natural beauty of Sardinia and turns it into one of the island’s most memorable nightlife settings. Instead of walking into a traditional nightclub, you’re dancing outdoors, surrounded by massive granite rocks, with the Mediterranean beside you and the Sardinian night sky overhead.
I happened to be there when Black Coffee was spinning. There are certain travel moments you couldn’t plan better if you tried. Hearing Black Coffee play at Phi Beach, after dinner at Nammos, with the sea just steps away, was one of them. The music, the crowd, the setting, the energy. It was the perfect progression of the day.Beach. Lunch. Sunset. Dinner. Dancing. No complicated itinerary. No rushing across the island trying to make the next reservation.
Everything simply flows into the next experience. Nammos currently serves lunch from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and dinner from 7:30 p.m. until 1 a.m., making it entirely possible to arrive in the afternoon and surrender the rest of your day to Sardinia.
And that might be the best way to experience it. Come for lunch. Stay for sunset. Let dinner turn into a party. Then follow the music.
Sardinia or Saint-Tropez? Sardinia or Ibiza?
People constantly ask where to go in Europe during the summer. For years, the answers have almost automatically included Saint-Tropez, Mykonos and Ibiza. After this trip, I would add Sardinia to the conversation immediately.
Actually, I would put it near the top of my personal list. If you want nonstop nightlife, Ibiza will always have its place. If you want the unmistakable theater of the French Riviera, Saint-Tropez knows exactly how to deliver it.
But Sardinia gave me something I didn’t realize I was craving.
Space.
Space to swim without feeling surrounded. Space to linger over lunch. Space to explore. Space to shop. Space to enjoy luxury without spending the entire vacation trying to prove that you’re having a luxurious vacation. Even making reservations felt more approachable during my visit. Instead of planning every minute around where we could get in, I could actually enjoy where I was. That might be Sardinia’s greatest luxury.
It still feels like you discovered something.

Go Before Everyone Else Does
Of course, Sardinia isn’t a secret.Porto Cervo has attracted an international crowd for decades, and the Costa Smeralda has long been associated with yachts, luxury hotels, fashion and some of Europe’s most beautiful coastline. Porto Cervo itself was developed beginning in the 1960s under Prince Karim Aga Khan and became one of the Mediterranean’s celebrated summer retreats. But there is a difference between a place being known and a place feeling overexposed. Sardinia, at least for me, hasn’t crossed that line. Not yet.
That is why I would go now. Go for water so clear you’ll question whether you’re still in Europe. Go for afternoons spent moving between beaches and long lunches. Go shopping in Porto Cervo. Order the lobster pasta at Nammos. Get the truffle pasta too because vacation isn’t the time for unnecessary decisions. Share the octopus. Order another round. Stay for sunset.
Most importantly, don’t rush. Saint-Tropez taught us how glamorous summer in Europe could be. Ibiza taught us how to party through it. Sardinia reminded me how good it feels to simply enjoy it. And sometimes, that is the greatest luxury of all.
