Your Guide to Western Massachusetts: Farm-to-Table Dining, Local Spirits, and Iconic Art

Western Massachusetts is where rolling hills, historic charm, and culinary innovation converge in perfect harmony. Recently, I joined a group of journalists to explore this vibrant region, uncovering a magical blend of locally crafted spirits, farm-to-table dining, and rich cultural history. Each moment felt like a celebration of life’s finest pleasures.

Here’s why Western Massachusetts should top your travel wish list.

The Berkshires: A Cultural Haven with Distinctive Flair

Savoring Spirits at Berkshire Mountain Distillers
Nestled in the scenic Berkshires, Berkshire Mountain Distillers epitomizes the region’s farm-to-bottle ethos. Touring the distillery and sampling their award-winning spirits was a highlight, each sip reflecting a deep passion for excellence.

Their Ethereal Gin was a revelation—smooth, aromatic, and complex enough to convert even reluctant gin drinkers (like me). The Ragged Rum, with rich notes of caramel and spice, transported me to the tropics, while their Bourbon Whiskey offered a bold, warming finish perfect for fireside evenings.

Beyond the spirits, the palpable pride of the team was undeniable. Their innovative collaborations with brands like Samuel Adams have elevated this distillery to iconic status. Naturally, I couldn’t leave without a bottle (or two) in hand.

A Stroll Through Americana at the Norman Rockwell Museum
A short drive away lies the Norman Rockwell Museum, where art and nostalgia come alive. Wandering its galleries felt like stepping into America’s storybook. Each illustration evoked warmth, simplicity, and reflection.

Complementing Rockwell’s timeless works was Anita Kunz’s “The Original Sisters”, a contemporary exhibition celebrating trailblazing women (on display through May 2025). Kunz’s vibrant portraits provided a powerful tribute to courage and resilience, offering a dynamic counterpoint to Rockwell’s classic Americana.

New England Classic: Dinner at The Red Lion Inn
No trip to the Berkshires is complete without a meal at The Red Lion Inn. Starting with crispy shrimp croquettes and ending with their One-Cow Smash Burger—a house-ground masterpiece smothered in cheese and their signature Lion’s Sauce—every bite was a symphony of comfort and creativity.

Springfield: Where Innovation Meets Indulgence

History and Whimsy at the Springfield Museums
Springfield proudly showcases its history, and nowhere is this more evident than at the Springfield Museums. This collection of five world-class institutions celebrates everything from the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss to the invention of basketball.

Highlights included a playful photo op with the Grinch in his grotto and marveling at Springfield’s past innovations, from the first gasoline-powered car to the modern dictionary.

Craft Beer and Culinary Bliss at White Lion Brewing
Lunch at White Lion Brewing, Springfield’s first Black-owned brewery, was an unexpected delight. Their craft beers were bold and flavorful, but the star of the meal? The beef ribs—juicy, smoky, and so tender they practically fell off the bone.

Deerfield: A Step Back in Time

In Historic Deerfield, history comes alive in an impeccably preserved 18th-century village. After exploring the Flynt Center and its exquisite collection of early American art, I enjoyed lunch at Champney’s Restaurant at the Deerfield Inn. Their margarita flight paired perfectly with a crispy chicken sandwich, served with a side of New England charm.
