As I step off the plane in Rio de Janeiro on Christmas Day, the warmth and humidity envelop me like a lover’s embrace. The sun kisses my skin, the air is thick and sultry, and the city’s vibrant energy seems to hum in the distance. This is my fifth trip to Brazil, and every visit feels like falling in love all over again. Yet this time, there’s something deeper—a connection that feels more profound, perhaps enhanced by the festive magic of the holiday season. Whatever it is, I’m hooked.
Barra da Tijuca: Rio’s Hidden Gem
This trip leads me to Barra da Tijuca, a neighborhood I’ve only briefly visited in the past but am now eager to explore more. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Rio’s iconic beaches, Barra is a luxury enclave often overlooked by tourists in favor of the flashier Copacabana and Ipanema. But it’s in this quieter corner of the city that I find the perfect mix of relaxation and sophistication. “Barra is where the ‘new rich’ go to unwind,” my Uber driver tells me with a knowing grin.

One of my favorite discoveries is Pato com Laranja, a trendy hotspot where the food and nightlife blend seamlessly. With its eclectic menu of sushi, seafood, and meat dishes, the restaurant draws a fashionable crowd who stay long after dinner, dancing under the stars to the beat of nightly DJs.
Copacabana and Ipanema: Rio’s Timeless Heartbeat
No visit to Rio would be complete without a stop in Copacabana and Ipanema, the legendary neighborhoods that define the city’s rhythm. On previous visits, I stayed at the Miramar by Windsor Copacabana, where the rooftop pool offers sweeping views of the beach, and Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana, where the spa is a slice of tranquility after a busy day of exploring.
Ipanema Beach, known worldwide for its golden sands and the iconic “Girl from Ipanema” song, remains one of Rio’s greatest treasures. Here, locals and visitors bask in the sun, sip coconut water, or take refreshing dips in the turquoise waters. The energy of Ipanema is palpable, with samba rhythms and street artists adding their own flavor to the bustling beachfront promenade.

New Year’s Eve at Copacabana Beach is a spectacle like no other. Over two million people gather on the beach, dressed in white to honor Yemanjá, the goddess of the sea. The air is electric, filled with the rhythm of samba and the beauty of a fireworks display that paints the night sky in bursts of color.

Lapa: Known for the iconic Escadaria Selarón, the colorful steps that have become synonymous with Rio, Lapa is where the city’s nightlife comes to life. Samba beats fill the air, and street parties spill into the streets, creating a festival of rhythm and joy.
Tijuca Forest: The world’s largest urban rainforest, this is Rio’s green heart. Whether hiking its trails or simply basking in its natural tranquility, the forest offers a refreshing escape from the city.
Parque de Lage: An iconic location where Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams filmed their legendary music video for “Beautiful.” Nestled at the base of Corcovado Mountain, the park’s lush green spaces and colonial architecture provide the perfect backdrop for Rio’s soul-stirring beauty.

Xian Rio in the Bossa Nova Mall offers a perfect fusion of modern Asian cuisine and breathtaking views of Guanabara Bay. The oxtail bao buns are a revelation, and the sushi? Simply perfection.
For authentic Brazilian cuisine, head to Aprazível in Santa Teresa. Set in a rustic country-home atmosphere, it serves organic dishes paired with locally sourced ingredients and a variety of cachaça cocktails. The views of Rio’s hillside make for a romantic and unforgettable dinner.
Hachiko, a cozy spot tucked in a colonial-style loft, offers a delightful blend of Japanese and Western flavors, with a laid-back vibe that makes it perfect for a relaxed evening.
For casual comfort food with a side of fun, Aconchego Carioca in Lapa is the place to be. With hearty dishes like dumplings and shrimp in pumpkin, this North Brazilian gem is as delicious as it is lively. The inclusive, LGBTQ+ friendly environment adds an extra layer of warmth to the experience.
The Soul of Brazil: A Rich Tapestry of Culture
What keeps pulling me back to Brazil is its soul—the music, the art, and the warmth of its people. On my first visit, I was struck by the prominence of Black figures in Brazil’s street art. As an African American, seeing these powerful representations was both moving and comforting. Brazil’s Afro-Brazilian heritage is celebrated everywhere—from the rhythms of samba to the spiritual practices of Candomblé.

I stumbled upon a funk party in Lapa one evening, where people of all walks of life came together to celebrate in the streets.
